Halle Berry and Oliver Martinez Welcome a Son; Berry Headed to TV

Halle Berry, 47, and Olivier Martinez, 47, welcomed a baby boy yesterday. This week it was also announced that Halle Berry will star in the CBS TV series "Extant."

Halle Berry and the French actor Olivier Martinez were married in July. The Oscar-winner Berry first revealed that she was expecting a baby in April.

Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez welcomed the birth of their first son Saturday.

Halle Berry’s representative didn’t share many details about the baby boy. At this time the media does not know where he was born or his name. Halle Berry also has a 5-year-old daughter, Nahla, with her ex-boyfriend the Canadian model Gabriel Aubry. The couple had a bitter custody battle but reached “an amicable agreement" over custody in November, a week after Thanksgiving Day.

The Oscar winning actress first revealed that she was expecting a baby in April. Berry told CNN "This has been the biggest surprise of my life, to tell you the truth. I thought I was kind of past the point where this could be a reality for me. So it's been a big surprise and the most wonderful."

Halle Berry married Martinez in July in a private ceremony in France in July. They met on the set of the film "Dark Tide." It is Halle Berry’s third marriage.

This week it was also announced that Halle Berry will make her first starring role on a TV. CBS announced that the star of “Bulworth” and “Catwoman” will star in "Extant," an upcoming serialized drama from Steven Spielberg that is due to premiere in the summer of 2014.

Halle Berry will play an astronaut trying to reconnect at home after a year-long solo mission in space.

Berry said in a statement that she is always on the "lookout for amazing roles," and said "when you see material that contains this strong of auspices, nuance and complexity it compels me to run toward it no matter the medium. For five months a year I'll get to live with and play this incredibly intelligent and vulnerable woman, and for the remainder of the year I'll continue to look for other roles that move me as deeply as this one.”

Spielberg said "There's only one Halle Berry and we are incredibly honored that she has chosen 'Extant' to expand her illustrious career. As she does with everything she touches, she will bring a deep authenticity to her role and I very much look forward to working with her."

Berry won an Academy Award for her role in 2002’s "Monster's Ball." She also starred in the "X-Men" films, "Cloud Atlas," "Die Another Day" and “Dark Tide.” On TV, Halle Berry appeared on "Living Dolls," "Amen," "Knots Landing" and "Fraiser."
