Gazelle"WildCat" Robot A Galloping Four-Legged DARPA-Funded Terrifying Wireless War Machine [VIDEO]

A robot that can gallop like a gazelle is making waves and loping along [WATCH VIDEO BELOW].

The robot gallops on four legs like a gazelle leaping through a field. It's the latest project from Boston Dynamics, an engineering company specializing in robotics. The DARPA- funded robot may be used by the military in war- and some call this prospect "terrifying".

Developers at Boston Dynamics released the video of the galloping robot. Eventually, the robot will be able to "gazelle" its way through any type of terrain and run up to 50 mph.

WildCat is a four-legged outdoor running robot that can rise, turn around, and reach running speeds up to 16 mph on flat ground.

Last year, Boston Dynamics invented the Cheetah, another quadrupedal robot. The Cheetah could run at speeds over 28 mph on a treadmill, which is faster than the fastest human, Usain Bolt, who has clocked a top speed of 27.78 mph.

However, the Cheetah was connected to a power source-the WildCat is a gas gazelle-r. And soon, it will be able to run up to 50 mph.

The robot has a large, loud motor to operate its limbs. The WildCat joins The Sandflea, The Cheetah, The Bigdog and The Atlas, previous Boston Dynamics inventions.

Boston Dynamics said of the robot,

WildCat is a four-legged robot being developed to run fast on all types of terrain. So far WildCat has run at about 16 mph on flat terrain using bounding and galloping gaits. The video shows WildCat's best performance so far. WildCat is being developed by Boston Dynamics with funding from DARPA's M3 program.

The thought of this steel robot running at 50 mph is somewhat unsettling, according to online reviews, who are worried about the murderous motives such a creature might have-or be trained to have. It's also incongruously animal-like and mechanical at the same time; thus the sight is, well, disconcerting. Still, the robot is quite a feat of engineering, and how it will be used is still unknown.
