NBA Free Agents 2014: LeBron James To Dallas? The King Snubbed Mark Cuban In 2010, Will He Listen To League's Loudest Owner Now?

The Dallas Mavericks is one of the rare teams that made it to the playoffs yet still maintained cap space to run after a free agent. That sounds like an attractive place to chase a title. Will LeBron James finally take notice of the only team to beat the Big Three in the playoffs?

Mark Cuban came up with blanks last summer when they chased Dwight Howard. They also missed out on the other free agents like Andre Iguodala, eventually settling for Monta Ellis.

The Mavs were written off as a possible tanking team, but Coach Rick Carlisle did a great job of unleashing the talent of Monta Ellis, utilizing him in the best way possible. Former high flying dunk demons Vince Carter and Shawn Marion also made the most of their weary legs.

Now they have the cap space, although they still need to sign Nowitzki. But Dirk has declared as early as last year, he's willing to take a drastic pay cut to enable his team to sign a top tier free agent.

The top tier free agents of this season are practically the top tier of the league. Most of them would complement Dirk at the frontline. ESPN reports:

"Dallas did not make the short list of teams given the chance to sit down with LeBron in the summer of 2010, but that didn't stop Mark Cuban from lobbying LeBron's people behind the scenes. Rest assured that the Mavs will run out that ground ball again, just in case."

Indeed, Cuban will make his due diligence-and this time, it may pay off. From Dallas Morning News:  "He(LeBron) will opt out, from all indications. And when he does, there will be 30 teams kicking the tires with his agent to see if there's any chance. About 25 of those teams will instantly be told no. The rest will be told to make their best pitch. The Mavericks probably have a chance to get to the table, just because of Cuban. Stranger things have happened, but not many."

It's a very real possibility just as it was in 2010. Dallas is still a big market, with a superstar, a generous owner and a smart coach. Not too many teams have those assets.
