2014 NBA Finals Predictions: San Antonio Slightly Favored in A Full Seven Games! Coach Popovich Has Improved His Roster But Tony Parker Injury May Be A Factor

The 2014 NBA Finals is upon us, and it's the much-awaited rematch between the San Antonio Spurs and the Miami Heat! They gave us a classic series that left fans wishing it was a best of 14. Lo and behold, we have it!

Last year's Finals drove Timmy Duncan to tears at the podium and left a bitter taste in coach Gregg Poppovich's palate. It was their first Finals defeat in 5 outings. When San Antonio gets there, they go all the way, until they faced LeBron.

They have the chance to set things right-is San Antonio up to the task? It's Prediction time!

SI.com has 6 voters, and they won't 4-2 for San Antonio. None of them had the series ending in less than 6 games.

Some comments:

"Matt DollingerSpurs in 7.  The Spurs came within 5.2 seconds of a title last year - they won't let it slip through their hands again this season. Rarely do spurned teams get an opportunity so ripe for revenge as this one. San Antonio has spent the last 12 months preparing for another trip to the Finals and will have to cap its comeback story against the team that started it, but the Spurs' improvements outnumbers the Heat's since last year. They've deepened their bench, gotten more athletic and even less reliant on their Big Three - the same can't be said for their counterparts."

San Antonio did look like the well-rounded team this year. Coach Gregg Popovich won Coach of the Year because he demonstrated exemplary roster management. The Spurs marched to the top of the standings with even less minutes from the aging Big Three, which means that all the other peripheral players have more experience and are ready to win games. Kawhi Leonard, Danny Green, Patty Mills, Tiago Splitter, Boris Diaw, Cory Joseph and occasionally Matt Bonner-they are all ready to play big when Pop calls them.

The same cannot be said of the Miami Heat. Aside from the Big Three, they only have Mario Chalmers, Ray Allen, Shane Battier, Norris Cole as reliable rotation players and occasionally Udonis Haslem and Rashard Lewis. In a nutshell, the Spurs expanded their rotation since last year, the Heat even lost Mike Miller.

Here's another angle, though:

"Lee Jenkins: Heat in 6.  I was initially leaning toward San Antonio in 7, but I'm spooked by Tony Parker's mysterious ankle injury, and I think it matters that Miami's playoff run has been so much easier. In my opinion, Dwyane Wade is the key to the series, and he is rested for the job. Offensively, the Heat have handled this post-season like two-time champs, but there is room for improvement on the other end. They will have to dial up their defense, to 2012 and '13 levels, in order to win again. LeBron James will find an extra gear on D."

Tony Parker has confirmed that he will play in Game 1, but the picture of him limping out of Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals (which instantly became a must-win for the Spurs to buy him some time to rest) may scare some votes.
