Showtime renewed "Penny Dreadful" for a second season of 10 episodes premiering next year. Penny Dreadful stars Josh Hartnett, Timothy Dalton and Eva Green.

"It's been well reviewed by mainstream critics, it's giving us a Comic-Con-appeal show. It's a whole new world as imagined by Logan."

Penny Dreadful is only halfway through their first season, a short season of only eight episodes, but the show did so well with younger audiences, that cable network ordered 10 episodes for season two.

Nevins says the rest of the first season explore the characters and history of their relationships. He told EW "It just gets richer deeper and more complicated with the characters. We're only four episodes in and you're only just getting a taste of what's to come."

Penny Dreadful was created by screenwriter-playwright John Logan, who wrote all eight of the first season episodes. Logan intends to write the teleplays for all of season two as well. In between writing the next two James Bond movies and a musical he's writing with Sting called "The Last Ship," which heads to Broadway this fall.
Penny Dreadful is run by Logan's Desert Wolf Productions and Sam Mendes' Neal Street banner along with Sky Atlantic out of England. Production for the second season will start later this year in Dublin.

Showtime entertainment president David Nevins told Variety "We were trying to do something a little different for Showtime and find a show that would re-establish us with passionate genre fans in the post-'Dexter' era. It feels like we're hitting on both levels with a show that has deep, rich, complicated characters and interesting psychology and the genre component. The world of the show is just getting deeper and richer. John Logan has incredible ideas that are just starting to be exposed. I can't wait to see how it evolves in season two."
