The Hunger Games Takes Aim At Theme Park Run After Touring Exhibition, But Will It Set The World on Fire?

The Hunger Games is going on tour but may find a permanent home in the mysterious Disctrict 13. Lionsgate announced that it is exploring the possibility of a theme park based on The Hunger Games movies and novels. Lionsgate will test the waters by launching a Hunger Games exhibition at museums around the country.

Lionsgate Entertainment announced that it is launching "The Hunger Games: The Exhibition."  The Hunger Games Exhibition will feature displays of the props and costumes worn by Katniss Everdeen, Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, played respectively by Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

The exhibit will tour U.S. cities in the summer of 2015, months ahead of the November 20, 2015, worldwide release of the fourth film, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2.

Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer says the tour is a "state of the art traveling museum." He told investors that the tour is "a first step" as the company looks at what it can do in theme parks, theme park attractions and other entertainment venues.

Last November, Feltheimer told analysts that two international parties approached Lionsgate about possible theme park opportunities. "It gives you a sense of the cultural impact of this franchise," he said at the time. "We are excited about those opportunities and are pursuing them."

The first two "Hunger Games" films pulled in over $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office. Daily Finance analysts said that might not be enough to carry a theme park after the last of the four films hits theaters in 11 months.

Lionsgate is teaming with theme-park and location-based entertainment specialist Thinkwell Group for the project.

A Lionsgate Entertainment press release says Jenefer Brown of the Thinkwell Group will help "explore additional theme park attraction and other location-based entertainment opportunities around the world."

In a statement, Lionsgate chief marketing officer Tim Palen said "Now that we've built a critical mass of intellectual property, we're committed to extending our brands into exciting new businesses that create opportunities for our fans to engage with our properties at the same time they deliver significant incremental financial benefits to Lionsgate."
