Odorizzi has had single innings in which he's thrown 30-40 pitches. It happened again in his last start Saturday against the Red Sox, who forced him to throw 41 pitches in their three-run third as seven batters came to the plate. Odorizzi exited the game with 84 pitches in 3 1/3 innings, according to MLB.com.

"I don't really think there's anything you can do. Make pitches. That's about all you can do," Odorizzi said. "There's not really an approach that I can take that's a formula for, 'Hey, they're going to put this pitch in play and you're going to have a low pitch count.'"

Meanwhile, Turner is also coming off a loss. The Braves took advantage of four walks and put five runs up on the righty in five innings Saturday.

Turner is 1-3 with a 5.23 ERA in six starts since returning from a stint on the disabled list with a shoulder sprain. Batters are hitting .328 against him. Even though the Rays have one of the worst team averages in the league (.243), Turner will ignore that detail when he takes the ball on Thursday.

"They've got a good lineup from top to bottom," the 23-year-old said. "Once they get guys on base, they like to put a lot of pressure on you, so I think the biggest thing is just getting ahead and staying ahead -- really keeping your foot down against them.

"They've got the type of lineup that, once they get some guys on base, things can start to snowball if you're not careful. With a lot of the guys that they have, pitching ahead is gonna be crucial."
