Cueto (5-, 5-5, 1.97 ERA) coming off one of two non-quality starts in 13 tries this season. The Phillies plated four runs on six hits against Cueto and chased the righty after five innings, according to MLB.com.

"After five I took him out simply because we've asked a lot of Johnny," Reds manager Bryan Price said after Cueto's last start. "We've asked him to throw seven to nine innings darn near every start. He's thrown 100-plus pitches often. It just seemed like one of those days where I didn't want to ask him to continue to do more on a day where we should ask him to do less."

Even with the poor start, Cueto still is in the top three in the Majors in the following categories: WHIP (0.792), ERA (1.97), innings pitched (96), complete games (three) and shutouts (two).

His counterpart will be Hyun-Jin Ryu, (7-2, 3.08 ERA). He is 5-0 with a 0.95 ERA and 0.974 WHIP in six starts away from Dodger Stadium in 2014.

The Reds know they'll have it tough in Wednesday's matchup and that they need to make a move in the right direction now.

"If this is a more critical stretch than others, I don't know," Price said. "I do know we've got teams ahead that we're playing here and we're going to be playing a lot -- especially going into and coming out of the All-Star break. We're going to need to beat them or we'll put ourselves in a position that it will be really hard to rebound from."
