Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini Update: Android 4.4.2 KitKat Arrives On Compact Version’s US Cellular Variant; Users Keep An Eye Out On OTA

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini update: Android 4.4.2 KitKat is now available to the US Cellular variant of the device, Android Police reports. The tech site noted that all the talk the past week about the upcoming Android 4.5 has overshadowed the fact that the previously released updates is on less than 15% of Android devices.

The Android-focused site notes that US Cellular is helping increase that percentage, as it is now rolling out the Android 4.4.2 KitKat to Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and Samsung Galaxy Mega owners. Users must now keep an eye out for the over-the-air alert.

The Android 4.4.2 KitKat is not the most recent variant of the 4.4 KitKat available, since Google has also launched the Android 4.4.3 and Android 4.4.4. Most users, however, won’t be able to spot the difference. The US Cellular support page indicated that updates are available over the air or via Samsung’s Kies desktop program.

Android Police noted that the documentation of US Cellular is pretty sparse but users can expect all the goodies from the AOSP version of KitKat, plus a few touches from the newer Samsung version of TouchWiz.

If you have rooted or otherwise modified your handset, the standard OTA update may not work for your device.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is a Samsung Galaxy S4 look-alike with a smaller screen and less hardware muscle, PhoneArena notes. The unit comes with a 4.3-inch Super AMOLED qHD display, a dual-core processor and the TW Nature UX 2.0 on top of its Android 4.2.2 (its original mobile OS out of the box).

The device was announced May 30, 2013 and will be succeeded by the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini.

A quick look at Amazon.com shows that the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is priced between $280-$300 for an unlocked unit.
