Halle Berry Wouldn't Return to TV For Just Any Project, But Having An Alien Baby Bump With Steven Spielberg Brings Her Down To Earth

Halle Berry doesn't say yes to television work every day, who cuold say no to Steven Spielberg? Halle Berry is making the move from big screen to small in this summer's CBS television series "Extant," a new sci-fi show produced by Steven Spielberg and his Amblin Television team.

"I'm a fan of sci-fi, but I'm even more a fan of Steven Spielberg sci-fi, which is more supernatural," Berry told Entertainment Weekly. "I love that this show is rooted solidly in strong characters before you get into the otherworldly aspects. You first get to know this family, and I think it's a beautiful setup for what's to come as we get further and further into the series."

The Oscar-winning actress' latest project debuts on CBS on Wednesday. Extant will be compared with last year's Sandra Bullock/George Clooney deep space film, "Gravity," which won seven Oscars, Halle Berry is also coming out of deep space. Halle Berry comes back from deep space, where she's been on a solo mission, and she's got an alien baby bump. Not just that Halle Berry's baby bump is alien to her, but it is alien to the planet.

"The minute I started to read it, I couldn't put it down," Berry told Entertainment Weekly. "I thought, 'Wow. This is different.' It's innovative. Molly is a strong female character, which I really love to play. Molly is a complicated woman with a complicated family.  Who is a woman who goes away to space for a year and leaves her husband, first of all? Who is a woman who comes back pregnant and tries to handle it somehow on her own? That just felt like a complication that I wanted to be a part of."

Berry plays Molly Wood, Halle an astronaut who spent a year on a solo mission in outer space and comes back pregnant. Annie Wersching plays Femi Dodd, a rival of John Wood, Molly's scientist husband, played by Goran Visnjic. Michael O'Neill plays Alan Sparks, the head of the international space exploration agency. Hiroyuki Sanada, Annie Wersching ("24") and Meryl Streep's daughter Grace Gummer ("The Newsroom") are also in the cast. Louis Gossett Jr., who plays the alcoholic father of Halle's astronaut Molly Wood, told the crowd at the Science Center, "Extant is the creation of a new being. [Molly] goes to space and comes back pregnant. She's an extant."

Extant has all the elements of an exciting new sci-fi series: spaceships, futuristic toys, aliens-even Steven Spielberg, who is an executive producer through his company Amblin TV, which is also responsible for CBS' summer hit Under the Dome. "I remember walking on the stage and someone going, 'Oh, Steven is here by the way,'" says Goran Visnjic, who plays Molly's husband John. "I was like, 'Really? Is my hair okay?'"
