Pixar Movies 'Inside Out' Takes Us To Unchartered Territory: The Mind Of A Little Girl! Riley Is First Female Pixar Lead Character Who Is NOT A Princess!

The upcoming Pixar Movie "Inside Out" takes us to a realm that Pixar has never dared to enter before, and even less of us would understand. Riley, a young girl who is trying to make sense of her emotions-all five of them!

It has been pointed out that prior to "Brave," Pixar has never placed a girl on the film's central seat. "Brave" did that pretty well, but in good old Disney tradition (which Pixar is now a part of) she was a Princess in 15th Century Scotland to boot.

An open letter published in NPR had a very sensible request:

"Please make a movie about a girl who is not a princess.

Well, the whole big world has a lot of little girls in it, too. And not all of them are princesses - and the ones who are princesses have plenty of movies to watch.

And even many of them who do aspire to be princesses are mixing their princess tendencies with all manner of other delicious things. Their tiaras fall off when they skin their knees running at top speed; they get fingerpaint on their pink dresses; they chip their front teeth chasing each other in plastic high-heeled shoes."

"Brave" did a pretty good impression of a reluctant princess, but "Inside Out" promises to be the one that modern girls would really take heart to.

From Vulture:

"The film's real protagonist is Joy (voiced by an effervescent Amy Poehler), one of five emotions who steer Riley through life via a control center in her mind that's akin to the bridge from the Starship Enterprise. Joy and her cohorts - including Fear (Bill Hader), Disgust (Mindy Kaling), Anger (Lewis Black), and Sadness (Phyllis Smith) - all work together to keep Riley emotionally balanced, and for the first 11 years of her life, the primary influencer is Joy, as evidenced by Riley's sunny demeanor."

That seems like a comfortable set-up until the biggest and most mysterious event in a young girl's life sets in to blow everything up: Adolescence!

Director Pete Docter ("Monsters Inc" and "Up") shared his inspiration for the movie: "The whole story sparked from watching my daughter grow up." It was too close to home as he saw his daughter lose her 'natural joy' when she reached puberty.

"Also, as we did our research, psychologists told us there is no one more emotionally attuned than a 12- to 16-year-old girl. They are just totally dialed in to read everything - for whatever reason, it's sociologically true."

Now the audience can really relate to the movie. After all, it's right inside their heads!

Since it will take place inside her mind, Riley is actually more of a 'setting' or a 'host' more than the actual protagonist.
