Psy Divides Profit 7 to 3 with YG Entertainment, Earned $13 Million

Psy is currently on a journey to reach the top of the US Billboard charts.

E-Daily, after confirming with many industry insiders, found out that in October of 2010, Psy and YG Entertainment decided that they would divide their profits 7:3, with the majority going to Psy. Even if Psy's contract is to expire, it's most likely that he will stay on as a producer or even renew his contract with the mega management company.

Psy has recorded #2 for the second week in a row on the US Billboard Hot 100. The music market in America is 20 times the size of the Korean market and it's definitely not an overstatement to say that the American market has a huge impact on the world's music market.

It's thought that Psy has created a pure profit of 13,000,000,000 Won (equivalent to approximately $12-13 million) over the past 3 months from his album sales, commercials and concerts/events. Sales have reached 33,000,000,000 won, which is a huge number that will be great for both the artist and YG entertainment.

It's impossible to predict what his future profits will be because this is the first time anything like this has happened for a Korean artist. However, looking at other American artists like Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift, who have reached #1, it's said that they record sales of approximately 200,000,000,000 won ($200 million).

Psy has currently not released his album in America and is still continuing his schedules in Korea, which are not huge parts of his profitable ventures. This is why that he's not reaching numbers that American artists may have reached in terms of profit. However, if he is to continue on this track, people think that he would definitely reach at least 1/10th of what they recorded in profits.

◇ How much did he make and where?

Most of the profit comes from album sales, single sales, commercials, concerts, events and royalty profits. The arena where he made the most money is in commercials. After "Gangnam Style" went viral, Psy has filed approximately 10 different commercials and his basic price went up more than twice what it used to be. Currently in order for him to model in anything, it would cost the advertiser $400,000 and at this point, he has 2-3 more commercials to film so people expect that he will make around $4 million just making commercials.

At his summer concert back in August, he also recorded profits of about $4 million. In order for him to appear at an event, he is paid $60,000 to $70,000 and the price goes up if it's an overseas event.

The profits from his album and single sales are not as big as you think. He has sold approximately 55,000 albums so far. He plans to release a new single or a mini-album in the US near the end of November.

Psy won't make much money from album/single sales in Korea. According to a report from the Ministry of Culture, Psy only makes 1 cent from every song, though it does vary from song to song, depending on how much it is sold for. However, it's not true overseas. iTunes ensures that the production label gest 70% of the profit and the amount of profits that goes back to the artist is about 10-20% higher than in Korea. Therefore, it's clear that Psy has made much more money by selling his record on iTunes in other countries than he did in Korea.

He is also paid in royalties everytime a tv program, a karaoke or a concert uses his song. According to Billboard Biz, "Gangnam Style" has had 46,000,000 viewers over the radio. Worldwide, "Gangnam Style" has been played over airwaves approximately 100,000,000 times. It's not completely clear how much "Gangnam Style" was played in Korea, whether it be over cable channels or in karaoke rooms but it could definitely become a huge portion for him. He does divide it with his partner songwriter Yoo Kun Hyung but Psy will definitely get the majority.

◇ YG Stocks Increase 160% ..Yang Hyun Suk Sitting on $200 Million

Psy's success is obviously making a huge impact on his management company, YG Entertainment. YG's stocks have gone up more than 160% since the beginning of this year, making Yang Hyun Suk entertainment's richest man in terms of stocks and bonds. YG is currently at #10 in terms of the price in KOSDAQ.

Yang Hyun Suk, who is the majority stockholder, has made more than $200 million thanks to Psy's successes and the stock increases. He surpassed SM Entertainment's Lee Soo Man, who used to be #1.

One can say that this is not Psy's peak but merely the beginning. He will come back to the US and begin his global activities, as he is at #1 in the UK and many other countries on other continents.

However, Psy's overseas profits will not all go to YG because he signed a contract with Scooter Braun in management within countries with the exception of Korea and Japan. His successes will lead to more interest in YG Entertainment, though, and this can create hugely synergistic benefits for YG's other artists like Big Bang, 2NE1 and Epik High.
