Little is known about the movie's narrative except that it will focus on Stephen Strange, a successful but arrogant neurosurgeon who damages his hands in a car accident, rendering them unusable for surgery.
Strange, who is wealthy like Tony Stark, uses almost all his money to find a cure for his hands. He travels to Nepal and comes across The Ancient One, who teaches him the mystical arts.
The "Doctor Strange" movie marks the studios' newest franchise in Phase 3 and will introduce the cosmic side to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
"The goal of these films is always to continue to expand what a comic book film is, what a Marvel Cinematic Universe film is," Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said in a statement published by Screen Rant. "And starting a couple years ago with 'Guardians of the Galaxy,' this year with 'Ant-Man,' next year with 'Doctor Strange' continuing to push the boundaries of that cinematic universe."
"With Strange, it is a classic Marvel origin story because he's got one of the best origins ever. And it's our opportunity to take that left turn into the supernatural," Feige said in a separate statement.
Before Cumberbatch bagged the role, several Hollywood A-listers including Jack Huston (American Hustle), Keanu Reeves (John Wick), Johnny Depp (The Lone Ranger) and Joaquin Phoenix (Walk The Line) were considered to play Stephen Strange.
The film also includes Chiwitel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mordo, Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) The Ancient One, Daniel Bruhl (Captain America: Civil War) as Baron Zemo and Juliet Rylance (Sinister).
Marvel's "Doctor Strange" movie releases in theaters on Nov. 4, 2016.
