David Hasselhoff has one of the most recognizable names in entertainment. Lisa Simpson, on "The Simpsons," learned to say "David Hasselhoff" before she learned to say Homer. Well, all that is changing. The star of "Baywatch," Knight Rider and a Spongebob movie, took to Twitter to announced he changed his name to David Hoff.
"Big news today and a massive relief for me. I hope everyone can understand... it feels great!" Hasselhoff, I mean, Hoff tweeted.
To prove it, the 63-year-old former Baywatch star posted a video clip showing documents featuring his new name.
Hoff is best known in the U.S. for the television hits Knight Rider and Baywatch, but Hasselhoff also enjoyed European success as a recording star after he released his debut pop album, Night Rocker,
"I've been wanted to drop the hassle from my life for years," the star announced. "Now, I have made it official: David Hoff."
Of course, this might not be entirely true. According to Entertainment Tonight, a Hasselhoff spokesperson said the actor change his name is for an Australian ad campaign.
Hasselhoff was first noticed on the soap opera "The Young and The Restless," where he played Dr. Snapper Foster. He moved on to his leading role as Michael Knight on the talking car TV show Knight Rider. He played L.A. County Lifeguard Mitch Buchannon in the series Baywatch, which he from the 1990s until 2001. He also appeared in such films as Click, Dodgeball and Hop.
Hasselhoff made his Broadway debut in the musical, Jekyll & Hyde in 2000. He also starred in the musicals Chicago and The Producers.
Baywatch premiered on NBC in 1989, but was canceled after one season when it placed 73rd out of 103 shows in the seasonal ratings. Hasselhoff revived it for the first-run syndication market in 1991 and was given the title of executive producer. The show spawned the spinoff Baywatch Nights, and a reunion movie, Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding.
Hasselhoff had a major role in The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, released November 19, 2004, as himself. Hasselhoff made an appearance in the movie DodgeBall: A True Underdog Story.
