Cate Blanchett is reportedly in talks with Marvel Studios to join "Thor: Ragnarok's" cast.
According to Variety, the "Curious Case of Benjamin Button" star may play one of the new female leads in Thor's third outing.
Blanchett, 46, would be making her first comic book adaptation movie in the Phase Three film. Marvel did not comment on the news, although sources including Screen Rant speculate that if the rumors were true, she would portray one of the Valkyries - "goddesses who choose the worthy fallen warriors from the battlefield to bring them to Valhalla. There they feast and prepare for Ragnarok (the end of the universe)."
The character, based on the Norse mythological figure Brynhildr, was almost introduced in 2013's "Thor: The Dark World."
Other sources claim that the Australian actress will not be the movie's only female lead and "Ragnarok" will debut the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first female villain.
Cate Blanchett is no stranger to fantasy films, having portrayed the royal Elf Galadriel in Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and appearing in "The Hobbit" films as well. Her recent works include Disney's live-action adaptation of "Cinderella," "Truth" and "Carol," a 50's lesbian romance for which she has been nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress.
"Thor: Ragnarok," the third solo movie of the Norse god of thunder, will be helmed by Taika Waititi (What We Do In The Shadows, Green Lantern), from a screenplay by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle, which was recently rewritten by Stephany Folson. Pre-production is scheduled to commence in June of next year.
Marvel's "Thor: Ragnarok" cast includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Jamie Alexander as Lady Sif and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner a.k.a. The Hulk.
Thor's third movie releases on Nov. 3, 2017.
