'Independence Day 2: Resurgence' Trailer Releases; 'Bigger' Wave Of Aliens Invade Earth

20th Century Fox releases "Independence Day 2: Resurgence" trailer.

Instead of revealing the sequel's narrative, the "Independence Day 2: Resurgence" trailer spends most of its two-minute runtime reintroducing characters from the first installment and recapping what has been happening on Earth since the aliens' first invasion twenty years ago.

Below is the official synopsis for "Independence Day 2: Resurgence" from the movie's viral marketing webpage War of 1996.

"From director Roland Emmerich and producer Dean Devlin, 1996's Independence Day shattered opening weekend and total box office records, becoming the year's top-grossing film. It also became the first movie in history to gross over $500m internationally."

"But Independence Day was just the beginning. We always knew they were coming back. After that film redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter in the Independence Day universe delivers a global spectacle on an unimaginable scale," reads the plot summary. "Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens' advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction."

Returning to their characters are Bill Pullman as former U.S. president Thomas J. Whitmore, Jeff Goldblum as MIT graduate-turned-cable guy Dave Levinson, Judd Hirsch as Julius Levinson and Vivica A. Fox as Jasmine Dubrow-Hiller.

Franchise newcomers include Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games series), Jessie Usher (Survivor's Remorse) and Charlotte Gainsbourg (Nymphomaniac). Maika Monroe (It Follows)

The original film became a smash hit in 1996 with a combined domestic and global gross of $817,400,891, at the time was the second highest global gross of all time. The film also won an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects.

"Independence Day 2" releases in U.S. theaters on Jun. 24, 2016.
