A crossover film between "The Ring" vs. "The Grudge" is officially happening.
According to Empire, a fan-made mash-up of "The Ring" vs. "The Grudge" went viral back in April. Their respective studios, NBC Universal Japan and Kadokawa have since jumped on the opportunity and created "Sadako Vs. Kayako" - who, are the lead ghouls in the Ring and Grudge movies.
Kadokawa has already released a trailer for "The Ring" vs. "The Grudge."
Kōji Shiraishi (A Record of Sweet Murder, The Curse) is attached to direct the crossover film, with Mizuki Yamamoto (Ghost Hunt) playing the lead character Yūri, finds herself caught between the two sinister spirits.
"The Ring" focuses on Sadako, a girl who possesses supernatural powers after getting experimented on by his father. Eventually, her father kills her and throws her corpse into a well. Samara's vengeful soul somehow transfers onto a videotape, cursing anyone who watches it with certain death in seven days. The only way to break the curse is to make a copy of the tape and make someone else watch it, transferring her curse.
An american adaptation starring Naomi Watts released in 2002 and made $250 million worldwide.
Hollywood is also rebooting the franchise, with director Javier Gutiérrez and newcomer Matilda Lutz attached to the project. The plot is said to take place 13 years after the events of the 2002 installment.
Meanwhile, "The Grudge" a.k.a. "Ju-On" in Japan, is a curse that is born when when an individual dies in the grip of rage or sorrow. The curse manifests in the place where the person died. Those who come across the evil force also die, while the curse is reborn repeatedly and passed on from victim to victim in an endless cycle.
The 2004 Hollywood adaptation of "The Grudge," starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, made $110,359,362 domestically and $187,281,115 was a moderate success and is recognized as the second highest grossing horror adaptation behind the American version of "The Ring."
"The Ring" vs. "The Grudge" a.k.a. "Sadako Vs. Kayako" is out in Japan in June 2016.
