'Star Trek Beyond' Director Justin Lin Discusses Trailer And Idris Elba's Villain Character

"Star Trek Beyond" director Justin Lin discusses the film's newly released trailer and Idris Elba playing the main antagonist.

This week, Paramount Pictures released the first "Star Trek Beyond" trailer, which was, according to Screen Rant, "light on specific narrative details, but was clearly packaged to not just appeal to fans of the rebooted 'Star Trek' films, but those who may be more interested in a 'Fast & Furious'-style 'Star Trek' film."

Lin, who directed four of the "Fast & Furious" movies, tackles the Enterprise's latest mission: a five-year mission to explore deep space.

"It was just really embracing the idea that the Federation, what would happen if you were going on a five-year journey and you're trying to also not only explore, but also maybe introduce other people to this way of thinking," Lin said in a statement published by Slash Film.

Lin also touched on Krall, the movie's main villain. The baddie, played by Idris Elba, debuted in the "Star Trek Beyond" trailer, although the actor was unrecognizable under the prosthetic makeup.

"When [Idris] came in, he had a lot of [prospective] projects and when I talked to him about this character, it wasn't about this or that it was about building or having a philosophy or point of view," he explained. "And I like his character because his character is really challenging the way of the Federation's philosophy and there are a lot of things that when I was growing up I wanted to see."

Joining Elba are Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin, who return to their roles as members of the U.S.S. Enterprise crew.

"Star Trek Beyond," the third film in the "Star Trek" reboot series, releases in theaters on July 22, 2016.
