Writer and cast member Simon Pegg isn't happy about the "Star Trek Beyond" trailer.
In 2016, the franchise celebrates its 50th anniversary with "Star Trek Beyond." It is the third film in J.J. Abrams' reboot of the "Star Trek" movie series that was launched in 2009. Abrams helmed the second film, "Star Trek: Into Darkness," but missed out on the third, due to his commitments with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Roberto Orci was originally attached to helm "Beyond," but was replaced by "Fast & Furious" director Justin Lin right before production started.
Lin's patent style was evident in the recently released "Star Trek Beyond" trailer, which was met with criticism from fans. Lin himself was disappointed with the final cut of the preview.
When I saw the teaser, I'm like 'Aw, s**t," Lin told Slash Film. "You really have to put the motorcycle in there?' So I get it, I get it, I get it."
The director then reassured that there's more to his film than what the preview has to offer. Now, co-writer Simon Pegg has weighed in on the issue, echoing Lin's statement.
"I didn't love it, because I know there's a lot more to the film," Pegg said in an interview with Hey U Guys. "There's a lot more story, and a lot more character stuff, and a lot more what I would call 'Star Trek stuff.'"
Meanwhile, the "Star Trek Beyond" trailer also debuted Idris Elba's character in the movie - the antagonist alien named Krall. Lin claims that the character is a new addition to the "Star Trek" lore and belongs to a "new species that we discover in this chapter."
The movie's plot follows the U.S.S. Enterprise and its crew on a five-year journey into deep space to explore new worlds.
Returning to their roles are Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, Zachary Quinto, John Cho, Karl Urban and Anton Yelchin. Sofia Boutella of "Kingsman: The Secret Service" actor also joins the cast.
"Star Trek Beyond" releases on July 22, 2016.
