After being the first K-pop artist to reach 1 billion views on youtube for his smash hit "Gangnam Style" PSY has reached another milestone on youtube. The YG artist has become the first Asian artist to reach 10 million subscribers on youtube.
According to a report by Soompi, PSY received his 10 millionth subscriber for his youtube channel last May 29. This landmark was not lost on youtube as they awarded the artist with a Diamond Play Button, a rare memento given to Youtubers who receive 10 million subscribers on youtube.
PSY, in a video, extended his gratitude to youtube not only for the honor but for providing him with the platform to reach millions of people around the world. "This is a true honor. YouTube has been an excellent platform and a 'bridge' that has allowed me to extend my decade-long career as a singer in foreign countries as well," he said.
Two of PSY's earliest hits "Gangnam Style" and "Gentleman" are two of the most viewed videos on the platform. "Gangnam Style" has been viewed 2.8 billion times while "Gentleman" recently entered 1 million views circle. The fresh subscriptions on PSY'sYoutube channel are believed to be connected to new fans generated by his comeback album after a 1 ½ year break "4 x 2 = 8" which is a play on his eighth studio album.
PSY's album featured creative collaboration with many fellow YG artists including "Gangnam Style" collaborator Tablo, G-Dragon, Taeyang, "Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo" actress Lee Sung Kyung and iKON's Bobby and B.I. The title tracks for the album "I Luv It" and "New Face" also reached all-kill status as soon as the album was released.
