123 Year-Old Man From Bolivia Accepted By Guinness World Records As Oldest Person Alive; What Is His Secret To Never Getting Seriously Sick And A Long Life?

A 123-year-old man has been accepted by Guinness World Records as the oldest man in the world, after he was discovered in Bolivia. What is his secret to a long, healthy life and incredible longevity?

The man is Carmelo Flores Laura, and he lives in a hut in the village of Frasquia, near Lake Titicaca, and the Guinness World Records has confirmed his age, The Inquisitr reports. Flores can walk without a cane and doesn't wear glasses, but he cannot speak Spanish, is illiterate, and has no teeth.

"I see a bit dimly. I had good vision before. But I saw you coming," he told the Associated Press.

Flores says he owes his longevity to exercise and his diet, AP reports.

"I walk a lot, that's all. I go out with the animals," Flores said. He herded cattle and sheep for most of his life.

"I don't eat noodles or rice, only barley. I used to grow potatoes, beans, oca (an Andean tuber)," he added.

The water Flores drinks originates on the snow-capped peak of Illampu, one of Bolivia's highest mountains.

Flores said he does not drink alcohol, but did drink some when he was young. He has eaten a lot of mutton, and though he likes pork it is hardly available. He fondly remembers hunting and eating fox as a younger man, AP reports.

Flores said he has never traveled farther than La Paz, which is 50 miles away, and has never been seriously ill.

Guinness World Records says the oldest living person verified by original proof of birth is Misao Okawa, a 115-year-old Japanese woman. The oldest verified age was 122 years and 164 days: Jeanne Calment of France, who died in 1997.

The director of Bolivia's civil registrar, Eugenio Condori, showed The Associated Press the registry that lists Flores' birth date as July 16, 1890. Condori said birth certificates did not exist in Bolivia until 1940. Births previously were registered with baptism certificates provided by Roman Catholic priests.

Though Flores is making big news, he has lost track of his age and estimates within a decade or so.

"I should be about 100 years old or more," Flores mused.
