ZTE Open Firefox Phone: First Phone With Mozilla OS Sells Out In Three Days, Poses Great Threat To Low-Priced Smartphones

For China mobile phone manufacturer ZTE, competing with the dominant players in the market can be done using a different OS or platform. It may sound pretty absurd not getting Android to do the bidding for them, but hey it did pretty well. And with its newest low-tier phone, ZTE Open, the Chinese company might have struck gold.

In a report by the Telegraph, the ZTE Open, powered by the first Mozilla Firefox OS, sold out right away just three days after it was launched on eBay in the United States, as well as the United Kingdom.

While there were some speculations regarding the total number of products it released, the success in sales may be in fact attributed to the phone's solid features. Aside from having Mozilla Firefox under the hood, the ZTE Open also boasts a decent 3.5 inch display with 480-320-pixel resolution. It is also powered by a single core Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 processor, 256 of RAM and a respectable 512 internal storage.

Reports from Know Your Mobile are also confident that the Chinese phone managed to sell out legitimately based on some of the pre-release versions of Mozilla Firefox OS.

Earlier this year, several Blackberry handsets also made news after selling out within a few days after release on retailers. However, retailers confirmed that the company only released a handful of units which easily sold out once they hit the shelves.

The ZTE Open was released in the US with a $79.99 price tag, while it was sold for £59.99 in the UK. While the phone will definitely not be able to tackle phone giants such as Samsung, HTC and LG, it would certainly do well in markets which target a decent touchscreen phone.

With this recent success, let us expect more handsets coming from these two emerging giants in the smartphone industry.
