Johnny Depp Mentions Retirement From Acting: Demanding Roles and Box Office Flops Make Acting an 'Insane Option'

Johnny Depp has mentioned retirement from acting. He cites the demands of being in character and not speaking his own words as enough to render acting as an 'insane option.'

The versatile actor has been renowned for his superb portrayals of offbeat and outlandish characters from Jack Sparrow to Willy Wonka and most recently, Tonto from the Lone Ranger.

Despite the diversity of his characters, Depp has skillfully immersed himself into those roles which has left the audience forgetting where the character ends and the actor begins. While this is the pinnacle of acting achievement, the 50 year old superstar admits that it does take its toll.

The mental and psychological demands of his roles has led him to an inevitable conclusion: In an interview with BBC, he shares his laments: "When you add up the amount of dialogue that you say per year and you realise that you've said written words more than you've had a chance to say your own words, you start thinking about that as an insane option for a human being."

Depp's horrific conclusion can be derived from the roles that he portrayed with Disney and his collaborations with director Tim Burton. His most memorable character, that of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Carribean series, is nothing less than iconic. It's impossible to picture anyone other than Johnny Depp to play Jack Sparrow.

Tim Burton, a director whose specialty is dark, offbeat movies, has recognized Depp's unmatched talent, and their collaborations have spawned both box office and crtical success.

However, Depp's recent outings have been lackluster. His portrayal of Tonto, the main sidekick of the Lone Ranger was panned by critics and the film itself was the latest in a line of Disney flops.

While the retirement plans are not absolute, Depp has expressed a desire to be identified as a person and not to be typecast with his roles. A place behind the camera is seriously considered as we finally hear the words of Johnny Depp, not Captain Jack Sparrow.
