Jodi Arias: Twitter Accounts of Jurors Requested by Defense; Alternate Juror Tweeted With Journalist

Jodi Arias’ lawyers want to see the jurors’ Twitter accounts. The attorneys for Jodi Arias want to monitor the jurors’ Twitter accounts to make sure they’re not tweeting details about the Jodi Arias murder trial on the social media site.

Jodi Arias was convicted of the first-degree murder of her boyfriend Travis Alexander on May 8. Jodi Arias stabbed Travis Alexander multiple times, shot him in the face and slashed his throat so violently she almost beheaded him 2008 in his home in suburban Phoenix, Ariz. The Jodi Arias jury couldn’t decide whether to sentence the former waitress and budding photographer with death or life in prison.

Jodi Arias’ fate lies in limbo as prosecutors determine whether to pick a new jury and purse the death penalty.

Neither the prosecution nor Jodi Arias’ lawyers have spoken in public about any plea deal talks. The defense motion that was filed on Wednesday hints that Jodi Arias is headed for a second trial. Defense attorneys wrote that Jodi Arias will “endeavor to paint a complete picture of who she is and why she deserves a sentence of life.”

Jodi Arias attorneys Kirk Nurmi and Jennifer Willmott are asking that the court compel all of the jurors who will be chosen to give Twitter accounts for monitoring.

The attorneys for Jodi Arias say the details would serve as a “crucial tool with which Ms. Arias can work to ensure that her jury are either not communicating about the case via Twitter or considering information that was sent to them via Twitter as opposed to what is presented to them in court.”

Jodi Arias’ lawyers argue that without the ability to monitor the jurors’ tweets, there would be no way of knowing whether jurors are communicating details about the case or receiving information they should be barred from seeing for prejudicial purposes.

The Jodi Arias jurors have been warned to avoid media coverage during the proceedings. They are also barred from talking about the case with anyone until they have been dismissed from the jury.

The defense attorneys wrote, “If every juror were to understand and follow this warning … there would be no issue with a juror choosing to ‘tweet’ information about the case. However, even a juror that follows this admonition could still receive a tweet containing extraneous information.”

The Jodi Arias trial caused a whirl of Twitter activity since the trial began in January. The Jodi Arias trial was streamed live on the Internet, and broadcast of several TV outlets. It was seen around the world.

Twitter users communicated with each other as well as with journalists and TV personalities who were covering the case. It is believed that Jodi Arias herself was tweeting during the trial through a third party.

Jodi Arias’ lawyers said that after the jury in the first penalty phase couldn’t decide a death sentence or life in prison, they discovered that an alternate juror communicated with a journalist using Twitter. The juror explained that she was allowed to use social media during the trial, but wasn’t allowed to discuss the case. Defense lawyers also said that the alternate juror had Facebook conversations and that someone commented about Jodi Arias’ temper.

The prosecution hasn’t filed a response to the motion yet. They have declined comment. There is a hearing set for Monday.

Jodi Arias admitted she killed Travis Alexander, but said she acted in self-defense because he was given to bouts of rage. Prosecutors said the killing was premeditated and fueled by jealous rage after Alexander said he wanted to break up with Jodi Arias and go to Mexico with another woman.
