Yosemite Fire Blazes Through California; No End in Sight

Yosemite fire is engulfing everything in its path as it blazes through California. The Yosemite fire has been burning almost a week now at the edge of the California's Yosemite National Park. The Yosemite fire now measures almost 200 square miles. Firefighters are having trouble containing the Yosemite fire.

The Yosemite fire is being called the "Rim Fire." Flames from the Yosemite fire are shooting to the sky and engulfing everthing it comes across.

Anjali Hempbill, a reporter from CBS Sacramento station KOVR-TV, reported from an area near Yosemite National Park on "CBS This Morning: Saturday" that the Yosemite fire appears unquenchable.
Area resident David Husid said "It's scary. You just don't want to see your house go up. We've got so many memories in the last year. It's like 'Backdraft' the movie. It sucks the air out, and all of the sudden you get a wind coming from nowhere, and it's not windy up here, and it's just the fire that's pulling all the oxygen, so it can breathe."

Ken Codeglia, a retired Pine Mountain Lake resident said "It feels a little bit like a war zone, with helicopters flying overhead, bombers dropping retardant and 10 engine companies stationed on our street. But if the fire gets very hot and firefighters evacuate, I will run with them."

Helicopter were called in to contain the Yosemite fire with water as the flames as thick smoke fills the valleys. Smoke from the Yosemite fire is so big it creates its own weather patterns. Firefighters say that makes it hard to predict where the Yosemite fire will spread. Dry brush and rugged terrain makes it hard to get into the Yosemite fire to hold the containment lines.

The Yosemite Valley has remained open and clear of smoke. The valley is the part of the park that is open to tourists. The Yosemite Valley is world-renowned for the Half Dome and El Capitan rock formations and Yosemite falls. The Yosemite fire is only about 20 miles away.

The California Governor Jerry Brown declared a state of emergency for San Francisco late Friday. The city is only 150 miles away from the Yosemite fire and utilities may be affected. The Yosemite fire threatens lines and stations that pipe power to the city. San Francisco gets 85 percent of its water from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir that is only about 4 miles from the Yosemite fire. The Yosemite fire is being felt throughout the region. Nevada issued smoke warnings and cancelled events as the Yosemite fire blew over the Sierra Nevada and across state lines.

Kari Cobb, a spokeswoman for Yosemite National Park warned people to stay out of the area and said the park stopped issuing backcountry permits to backpackers. She said "Right now there are no closures, and no visitor services are being affected in the park. We just have to take one day at a time."

Daniel Berlant, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, said "most of the fire activity is pushing to the east right into Yosemite."

The U.S. Forest Service says the Yosemite fire threatens about 5,500 residences, it has already destroyed four homes and 12 outbuildings in several different areas.
