Windows 8 News Update: Microsoft To Release Windows 8.1 To Manufacturers Today, Gets Start Button, Boot-To-Desktop Option, Other Features

If you were one of those people who were all too giddy about Microsoft's Windows 8 last year, you may not be totally satisfied so far with the developments the company have provided for the supposedly 'upgrade'.

But that will soon change as Microsoft moves forward.

Last Friday, Windows SuperSite editor Paul Thurrott tweeted that the new version of the company's Windows OS is ready. According to Thurrott, the final RTM (Release To Manufacturer) build number is 9600.16384.130821-1623.

Meanwhile, CNET news's Mary Jo Foley confirmed the Windows 8 update with two other reliable sources. According to her sources, several major changes have been made on the OS's code, which caused the frequent crashes and hangs among Windows users.

Foley also speculated that Microsoft opted not to announce the RTM due to the news of its CEO, Steve Ballmer stepping down on Friday. However, according to her sources, the announcement would be made today, August 26.

Windows 8.1, codenamed as "Blue", will pack several new features that would surely leave developers and users excited. Some of the added features include the well-loved Start button, an option to boot directly to desktop, ability to unpin Metro apps, an improved Windows store and other business features.

However, there is still no update whether the Windows 8.1 would be released to developers and users right away. Last year, Microsoft announced that any updates would not be released to anyone before October 18.
