Stone Temple Pilots Sues Former Vocalist Scott Weilland(Who Also Countersued); Releases EP With New Frontman Chester Bennington of Linkin Park

Stone Temple Pilots have taken legal action against former vocalist Scott Weilland for singing the band's songs in his solo outings. The band has since moved on with new vocalist Chester Bennington, formerly of Linkin Park fame.

Stone Temple Pilots (STP) has recently fired Scott Weilland, the band's original vocalist, due to his constant battle with drug addiction (which he seems to be losing) and his habitual tardiness. The band has taken legal action as Weilland continues to sing the band's songs in his solo concerts and has also used the band name in his personal promotions.

Weilland, on the other hand, has filed his own countersuit. He claims that he has founded and named the band, thus he has all the rights to use the name. He has also written or co-written most of the songs, so he has a right to those also.

In an interview with Billboard, Weilland has called the suit 'ridiculous' and has maintained an adamant stance. He says, "There has to be a reason for letting go a member; you have to give them a certain period of time to deal with it whatever different ways you want them to do."

"They'll have to buy me out of the company," was his final declaration.

STP has not yet responded to Weilland's statements, and have focused their efforts on their new record with Bennington. Their EP is scheduled for release on September 4.

They will also have a full promotional tour to promote their EP and eventually record a full album targeted for an early 2014 release.
