Are Liam Hemsworth and Miley Cyrus heading towards a break up? At the MTV VMAs 2013 on Sunday night, Liam was noticeably absent from the Video Music Awards, and Miley Cyrus' memorable performance and red carpet appearance were sans her fiance.

Instead of walking the red carpet at the 2013 MTV VMAs with her fiance and "Hunger Games" star Liam Hemsworth, Miley Cyrus was accompanied by her producer Mike Will Made It. She showed up in a racy bejeweled black outfit and posed for cameras with Mike Will Made It.

According to Hollywood Life, Liam and Miley were last seen together at the August 8 premiere of Liam's new film "Paranoia," where they barely talked or touched all night, leading to speculation that their engagement was on the rocks.

As the website notes, Miley supported Liam for his big career moment, so why was he not present for hers? Miley had four nominations for her single "We Can't Stop," The Inquisitr reports.

Perhaps he stayed away from the VMAs knowing that Miley was going to be rubbing up against Robin Thicke in her underwear, and didn't feel like being put on the spot and asked how he felt about his fiance's twerking and grinding with another man on stage.

Another possibility is that Hemsworth was away in Canada filming for his upcoming film "Cut Bank," The Inquisitr reports.

"Liam does love her," a source told Hollywood Life. "It's hard to tell if he's madly in love with her because he's not the type of guy that does the big romantic stuff, but he is there for her when she needs him, so that says a lot."

Well, all we know is Liam wasn't there for her last night.

Yet we noticed that Miley was still wearing her engagement ring at the Video Music Awards last night, so maybe they are just going through a rough patch.
