Baton Rouge Sinkhole: [VIDEO] 24 Acre Assumption Parish Sinkhole Swallowing 100 Foot Trees On Youtube Video; Will the Sinkhole Keep Growing?

The Baton Rouge Sinkhole is seen in a video swallowing 100 foot trees on Youtube.  The Baton Rouge sinkhole is 24 acres and could continue to grow.

The Advocate reported that the Baton Rouge sinkhole has been growing since last August. It is likely the result of salt dome cavern collapsing deep underground. Scientists are saying that the sinkhole might keep growing for years.

Some sections of the 24-acre Baton Rouge sinkhole might be hundreds of feet deep.

Sinkholes can be caused by water underground that carves out caverns, such as this one. Just last week a Florida sinkhole made news when it caused buildings to collapse at a resort near Disney World.  Sinkholes can also be caused by human activity.  Large sinkholes have also happened in Guatemala, where a sinkhole 60 feet deep killed 15 people.

Luckily the Baton Rouge Sinkhole isn't a huge danger to humans as it is in a swampy less populous area right now.  Hopefully the Baton Rouge Sinkhole doesn't expand!

Human activity can contribute to sinkholes.  Sinkhole causes include changes in drainage due to construction or agricultural irrigation.  Well drilling is also a concern.  Sinkholes can't be completely prevented as heavy rains also cause sinkholes.

"Humans can [destabilize karst landscapes] by drawing down water tables or irrigate too much, increasing the weight of the mass of materials that sits on top of the void," Jonathan Martin, a geologist at the University of Florida in Gainesville, FL, told the Christian Science Monitor. "Humans can modify the environment" enough to cause sinkholes.
