“Divergent” is a movie about a girl trying to survive in a futuristic dystopian setting. Sounds familiar? “Divergent” runs smack against “The Hunger Games” territory. The new trailer is out, and the question is raised on whether it’s a worthy rival to the franchise or simply glorified fan fiction.

“Divergent” like “Hunger Games” is also based on a Young Adult book. The young adult book series have become huge hits, starting with the Harry Potter series, followed by Twilight and now The Hunger Games.

There are just too many parallels on the trailer to avoid comparisons. Foremost is that the central character is girl. The success of the original Hunger Games movie compounded by Jennifer Lawrence’s glorious Oscar victory makes the star factor gap too wide for Shailene Woodley to close.

The premise for The Hunger Games also places elicits more urgency. While Divergent makes it clear that the character is threatened with death, ‘hunger’ simply hits too close to home on for a survival standpoint.

The trailer for Divergent shows more suspense and seems to put the heroine in more life-threatening situations. The impression is that Divergent has a lot more to prove, and the fear is that the trailer may have given away too much.

Divergent has a solid fanbase from its book. As always, comparisons between the books will not translate to accurate comparisons for the movie. Will Divergent pique enough interest to rake in the fans, or will it just be another surfer on the Young Adult Wave?
