The latest Woody Allen flick, "Blue Jasmine" centers on Cate Blanchett. For both of them, this is hailed as their best work in 20 years.

Woody Allen's latest film is about feminism, or female empowerment. It centers fully on the lead character after what most rich people would consider their greatest tragedy: losing your material wealth and social status.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film Five stars out of five, and hailed it as Woody Allen's best work in the past 20 years. Considering Allen's formidable portfolio, that speaks a lot.

Cate Blanchett speaks of Woody Allen as a director: "I think he's incredibly disciplined. People talk about how hands-off he is and how he likes to give actors free rein but he knows exactly what he doesn't want. He eats the same thing for breakfast, wears the same clothes every day. I mean, he washes them - but he has 20 of that same Ralph Lauren silhouette." 

The movie's central character is a Park Avenue princess who never had to work in her life after marrying an enormously wealthy husband(Alec Baldwin). When her husband was sent to jail for his involvement in a Ponzi like scam, she loses everything and has to move in with her sister.

Strong female characters and their epiphany are Allen's staple topics and this move epitomizes that. Allen speaks on women's entitlement:." Some enlightened men have welcomed and encouraged and supported it(feminist progress). But I'm not so sure if you look deeply even into them that it hasn't been a little bit of an effort to accept women in roles that they're completely entitled to. If you asked most men in the privacy of their own home they might say: I liked it better when a woman got married and took care of the kids and I went out to work and the equation was clearly defined. Women should be free to have anything and everything they want in terms of all of those rights. It should be a given, not be a privilege. But it is undoing a more primitive situation."
