Emma Watson Graduates From Brown University; Hermione Granger Majored in English, Not Potions

Emma Watson Graduates Brown: Hermione Granger was a star pupil in the Harry Potter movies and books and the actress who played her is not too shabby a student either.

Yesterday, May 26, Emma Watson graduated from Brown University. Watson graduated with a bachelor's degree in English literature. Emma took to Twitter to share a cap-and-gown selfie with her fans. The valedictorian of Hogwarts pulled an Ivy League diploma out of her hat.

The 24-year-old actress started at Brown as a freshman 2009. In March she told the Sunday Times "On the first day, I walked into the canteen and everyone went completely silent and turned to look at me. I had to say to myself, 'It's okay, you can do this. You just have to take a deep breath and gather your courage.'"

Watson also studied at England's Oxford University. The actress continued to make movies while pursuing her degree. Watson took a year off in 2011 and graduated in five years.

In a 2011 interview, Watson said her role in the Potter made it hard to be an anonymous student. "I was in denial," she said. "I wanted to pretend I wasn't as famous as I was. I was trying to seek out normality, but I kind of have to accept who I am, the position I'm in and what happened."

Watson told the magazine Rookie in 2013, "I really like the fact that it has a very open curriculum, that there aren't any requirements. Really, I've kind of been in charge of my own education since I started out on Potter when I was 9 or 10, and I liked that I could design my own major if I wanted to, and I could take independent studies if I wanted to on subjects that weren't necessarily in the curriculum."

Watson is best known for her role as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter franchise, but has broadened her roles, working with Sofia Coppola and other directors.
