"True Detective" was definitely a breakthrough series that left fans waiting for more. But the story of Rust and Marty has all but been closed so Season 2 will open with an entirely new storyline as well as new lead stars.

If the first season featured two A-listers (one of them a newly minted Academy Award winner), one could expect no less for the second season.

The casting rumors would persist and it would even multiply, as series creator Nic Pizzolatto reveals in a the Best of Our Knowledge Podcast:

"Right now, we're working with three leads. It takes place in California. Not Los Angeles, but some of the lesser known venues of California and we're going to try to capture a certain psycho-sphere ambiance of the place, much like we did with Season 1. The characters are all new, but I am deeply in love with all of them. We have the entire season broken out, and I have a couple of scripts, and we'll probably start casting within the coming month."

The idea of having three lead stars is exciting. Also, with the possibility of having more 'prominent' female characters-it suggests that one or more of the lead stars would be female.

Let's revisit Pizzalatto's interview near the end of Season 1:

Slashfilm: "Okay. This is really early, but I'll tell you (it's about) hard women, bad men and the secret occult history of the United States transportation system."

The casting speculation will explode on determining the three leads. Jessica Chastain would have been ideal but she has already issued a denial. She has good reason, though. Grantland points out:  "Jessica Chastain has eight movies in post- or preproduction. She could have multiple movies hit theaters in the span of a 10-episode season of True D. (One of those movies she recently wrapped: Christopher Nolan'sInterstellar, which also stars McConaughey. Who better to tell you about the deep, existential satisfaction of doing a season of True Detective than Rust Cohle himself?)"
