Korean Rapper Don Malik Gets Detained and Denied US Entry For SXSW

Don Malik, a Korean rapper, is reportedly the latest to face border control immigration issues while trying to enter the United States. He was scheduled to perform a showcase for the Texas-based music festival SXSW. Don Malik and his crew were accordingly using visa waivers as directed by SXSW officials.

In this waiver program, as reported by Allkpop, artists from foreign countries are apparently granted entry to the U.S. without needing a standard work visa. The program is awarded in exchange for an exposure only or free performance. Unfortunately, Don Malik became the latest casualty in a line of artists who discovered that their waiver was invalid for entry to the U.S.

Arriving in San Francisco after a long flight from Incheon International Airport, Don Malik and his crew were detained and questioned by customs. They were then deported back home despite following the recommended protocol. According to a statement released by the CEO of the rapper's agency, Daze Alive, Don Malik and his crew were allegedly treated to a barrage of racist gesticulation and insinuations during their 24-hour detention.

There are purported claims that the immigration employees also called them chinks and even made monkey gestures at them. Resounding the sentiments of statements released by other SXSW artists that have reportedly been also detained, the performers were allegedly barred from accessing their cell phones. This made them incapable of contacting SXSW organizers for any type of assistance.

Reportedly, based on Dramafever's post, one member of the rapper's entourage was even placed in handcuffs, despite not having committed any crime. While it sounds a little weird, but unfortunately given the current U.S. political climate, the incident is totally credible. Accordingly, SXSW is indicated as one of the best arts festivals in the U.S., but it is now threatening artists who attempt to take part.
