Inkigayo Cancels April 16 Show To Commemorate Sewol Ferry Disaster Anniversary

SBS's Inkigayo music show is cancelled for the week to commemorate the third anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster which claimed the lives of 300 individuals, most of whom are schoolchildren. An SBS representative said that the show made the decision to postpone its airing to the following week in order to mark the grim date in Korean history.

According to a report by Soompi, the April 16 episode of music show Inkigayo will not be airing to commemorate the Sewol Ferry Disaster. Artists who have originally been scheduled to appear on the show this week have been advised to appear in the April 23 episode.

During the Inkigayo slot, SBS will air a rerun of the Sewol Ferry Disaster special "Answer Your Questions" which gives the viewers information on the disaster. The disaster was known as Korea's most devastating maritime disasters which eventually led to the ouster of then president Park Geun-Hye.

In time for the commemoration of third anniversary of the Sewol Ferry Disaster, Channel News Asia has reported that the Maritime Ministry is gearing to implement a complicated salvage operation on the wreckage left by MV Sewol. The measure is set to recover the remains of nine individuals who remain missing three years after the sinking of the ship.

The report cited that a group of salvage workers have already conducted initial inspections by entering through the wreckage's window but had to get out quickly because of the dangers of unstable debris. The Maritime Ministry has announced that it will be cleaning and disinfecting the wreckage that was raised intact via complicated salvage operation and will be undertaking safety checks before deploying salvage teams.

It can be recalled that the Sewol Ferry Disaster which caused the MV Sewol to sink while carrying 476 passengers from Incheon to Jeju was attributed to human error, illegal redesign and overloading.
