Jeon Somi's fans have recently expressed disappointment over the K-pop singer's limited activities since debuting in 2019.
The Canadian-Korean artist first gained prominence as the winner of Produce 101 and a member of the project group I.O.I. Following the disbandment of the project group, Somi moved from JYP Entertainment to The Black Label, a subsidiary of YG Entertainment.
Somi debuted as a solo artist in June 2019 with the single "Birthday," followed by her first studio album XOXO in 2021. While she has achieved milestones like the top-five hit "Fast Forward" in 2023, her releases have been sporadic. Her latest single, "Ice Cream," dropped in August 2024, marking her first musical activity in nearly a year.
Fans have now expressed disappointment over Somi's lack of consistent song releases, noting that she has only ever dropped 15 songs since debuting under The Black Label. They also pointed out that she has yet to establish a fan club, release a lightstick, or hold a solo concert, which are standard milestones for K-pop artists. Additionally, her promotional activities have been minimal, with limited behind-the-scenes content or music show appearances. This has led to accusations that the agency is neglecting her career during what should be her prime years.
"I think it's the company that is incompetent. Look at MEOVV and BLACKPINK lol. BLACKPINK members are so active with their solos right now after they left YG," one comment read.
"The Black Label is also part of the YG Group, so it's no surprise they are that kind of agency," another online user wrote.
It is notable that Somi previously said she was "100% satisfied" with how she is being managed under The Black Label. She also said she was thoroughly happy with her income and the people she works with under the management agency.
